The woman identified in a media report as Nigeria’s Ebola index patient has reportedly been evacuated from the country aboard a medical evacuation aircraft.
According to ARISE News, which cited sources, the evacuation took place early Monday morning at the private jet wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The report said the woman, described as the wife of a Swiss diplomat in Nigeria, was scheduled to be flown out of the country at about 6 a.m. aboard a medical evacuation plane that was already at the airport.
According to ARISE News, its crew, deployed to the airport’s General Aviation Terminal, obtained photographs showing a convoy of ambulances arriving from Abuja’s city centre, accompanied by diplomatic vehicles.
The three-vehicle convoy reportedly included a vehicle belonging to an international agency as it entered the airport’s private jet section.
According to the report, airport officials cordoned off the facility’s private wing, restricting access to the area during the operation.
Further reports indicated that it obtained video footage showing a medical evacuation aircraft and its crew preparing to evacuate the passenger, whom the outlet said was suspected to be the Ebola index case because of the special nature of the operation.
The report added that a source said the Federal Government would announce the medical evacuation only after the aircraft had taken off and left Nigerian airspace.
However, the circumstances surrounding the reported evacuation, including the patient’s identity, the destination of the flight and her current medical condition, have yet to be confirmed.
As of the time of filing this report, an official statement from the Federal Government or relevant health authorities confirming the evacuation was not included.
