With seven days to the All Africa Challenge Trophy, Nigeria’s first female professional golfer is leading efforts to introduce 300 girls to the sport through a legacy initiative designed to nurture future champions.

Nigeria’s first female professional golfer, Uloma Mbuko Ogbuokiri, is championing increased participation among young girls through the Girls in Golf Legacy Project as the country prepares to host the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT).

With seven days to the continental women’s golf championship, Ogbuokiri, coordinator of Girls in Golf, said the initiative seeks to create opportunities for young girls to discover the sport, develop their skills and aspire to compete at the highest level.

The project aims to mentor 300 girls, using the championship as a platform to inspire a new generation of female golfers and strengthen the future of women’s golf in Nigeria and across Africa.

Beyond introducing participants to golf, the initiative seeks to promote confidence, discipline, leadership and ambition among young girls through sporting engagement.

The legacy project also reflects efforts to ensure that Nigeria’s hosting of the continental championship delivers benefits beyond the competition, particularly by creating a pathway for more girls to progress from grassroots participation to competitive golf.

As teams prepare to converge on Abuja for the tournament, the initiative places youth development and the long-term growth of women’s golf alongside the pursuit of continental honours.

Nigeria will host the All Africa Challenge Trophy for the third time, having previously staged the competition at Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos in 1996 and the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja, in 2010.
The 2026 edition is scheduled to take place from November 2 to 7 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club under the slogan, “Uniting Africa Through the Greens”.

The championship will bring together female golfers from across the continent, providing an opportunity for competition, international exposure and the promotion of women’s golf.

However, the Girls in Golf Legacy Project seeks to ensure that the event’s impact extends to young people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the sport.

By targeting 300 girls for mentorship, the initiative aims to encourage greater participation and help build a stronger foundation for the next generation of Nigerian and African female golfers.

With the countdown to AACT 2026 underway, the focus is therefore not limited to the players competing for the continental title, but also on the young girls who could be inspired to take up golf and become champions in the years ahead.

As Africa prepares to converge on Abuja, the Girls in Golf Legacy Project is placing the next generation at the heart of Nigeria’s hosting ambitions.
