A federal high court in Lagos has ordered the remand of Nollywood actress Doris Ogala at the Ikoyi correctional centre pending the hearing of her bail application.
Ogala was arraigned on Wednesday on a four-count charge bordering on publishing personal materials without consent, spreading false information, cyberbullying, and attempted extortion.
The charges were filed by Chris Okafor, founder of the Mountain of Liberty and Miracle Ministry.
The case had previously stalled for two consecutive sittings due to Ogala’s absence. At Wednesday’s proceedings, the actress pleaded not guilty to all four counts.
Tolulope Mokolu, the prosecuting counsel, urged the court to remand Ogala pending trial, stating that he needed time to review and respond to her bail application, which he had just received.
However, defence counsel N. C. Atulomah opposed the remand request and asked the court to release his client on bail.
He noted that Ogala is a governorship candidate of a political party in Abia state and promised to produce her at the next hearing.
In his ruling, presiding judge Akintayo Aluko held that the defence had not presented sufficient grounds to justify her release, but ordered an accelerated hearing of the bail application.
He subsequently ordered that Ogala be remanded in the Nigerian correctional centre and adjourned the matter until October 30 to hear the bail application.
Proceedings later descended into commotion when the actress insisted on addressing the court despite attempts by her lawyer and others to calm her.
She shouted, saying, “I must talk, this is Nigeria, they are using government power to oppress me. My boyfriend is using government power to oppress me”.
The judge eventually rose for the day when the situation became uncontrollable.
In a post via Instagram, Ogala alleged that Jerry Eze, Suleman Johnson, Okafor and Abia governor Alex Otti were behind her remand because they feared she would expose secrets she knew about them.
“Jerry Eze, Suleman Johnson and Chris Okafor are responsible for my remand. Alex Oti is fully behind my remand as well. They are afraid of their secret, I know. All of them are responsible, believe me,” she wrote.
