JMG Limited has exposed mechanical engineering students of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) to industrial operations and the practical application of engineering principles during a visit to its factory.
The visit, organised for the YABATECH chapter of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), provided the students with an opportunity to observe how engineering knowledge is applied in industrial settings and complement their academic training with practical experience.
The engagement also highlighted the link between engineering education and professional practice through the participation of Engr. Musa Isiaq, a mechanical engineering lecturer and examination officer at YABATECH who previously worked with JMG.
Speaking on the importance of industrial exposure for engineering students, Isiaq said such experiences helped them understand how classroom knowledge translates into practical applications.
“Experiences like this help students better understand the connection between what they learn in the classroom and how engineering principles are applied in industry. Seeing these processes in practice can give them a clearer perspective on the skills and technical knowledge required in their chosen profession,” he said.
JMG provides engineering and electromechanical solutions across several sectors, including power generation, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), solar energy and industrial applications.
The company’s operations provided the students with practical insight into how engineering systems and technical expertise support industrial and commercial activities.
The Head of Marketing at JMG Limited, Oluwatomi Faniran, said industry-academia engagements were important in preparing young engineers for professional practice.
“At JMG, we recognise the importance of giving young engineers opportunities to see how the knowledge they acquire in the classroom translates into practical applications. Engagements like this help students gain a better understanding of the industry, the technologies involved and the role engineering plays in addressing everyday business and industrial needs. We believe that closer interaction between industry and academic institutions is valuable in preparing students for the realities of professional practice,” Faniran said.
The visit enabled the students to relate aspects of their academic training to real-world engineering applications and gain a better understanding of the technical considerations involved in industrial operations.
It also underscored the importance of collaboration between industry and academic institutions in strengthening engineering education, as exposure to industrial processes and professionals can complement classroom instruction.
For JMG, hosting the students provided an opportunity to engage aspiring engineers and strengthen the connection between technical education and industry.
Such engagements can broaden students’ understanding of engineering applications, professional expectations and the role of the discipline in solving practical problems and supporting industrial development.
