The Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress(NDC), Husseini Mairiga, has expressed optimism over reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission has cleared the party’s governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, for the 2027 election.
Mairiga, however, said the party was awaiting an official statement from INEC to confirm the development.
Speaking in a telephone interview with our reporter, he described the reports as encouraging, but noted that officials of the commission had advised him to wait for its official press release.
“This is good news and big news to us. But I spoke with people at INEC, and they told me to wait until tomorrow when their press release would come out,” he said.
The chairman expressed hope that the reports would be confirmed, adding that the party would resume its campaign activities if Gwarzo’s clearance was officially announced.
He said, “I want to thank my God and Allah for giving me this opportunity. I also want to thank the people of Kano for their concern over this issue. We have to continue campaigning and going door-to-door for the success of our candidate, Insha Allah.”
The development comes amid the party’s complaint over Gwarzo’s omission from INEC’s list of governorship candidates for the 2027 election in Kano State.
Mairiga had earlier said the party would approach a court if the commission failed to resolve the matter, following the expiration of the October 24 deadline for complaints over the exclusion of candidates.
