A 35-year-old miner, identified as Ibrahim Jabir, has died following the collapse of a mining pit at Asaradan village in Jos East Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred at about 12:10 a.m. on Sunday when the mining pit reportedly collapsed, trapping the victim.
A resident of Jos East, Peter Ajik, who confirmed the incident to newsmen in Jos yesterday, said, “The victim, Ibrahim Jabir, died in the incident. The incident happened at 12:10 a.m. when the mining pit collapsed.
“Unfortunately, the miner, Ibrahim Jabir, could not survive the incident. This is another reminder of the dangers associated with illegal mining activities, especially when adequate safety measures are not put in place.
“We are appealing to those involved in mining to take safety seriously.”
“Security operatives responded to a distress call following the collapse of the mining pit.”
“We are also appealing to the relevant authorities to intensify monitoring of mining activities in the area and ensure that safety measures are strictly observed to prevent further loss of lives,” he said.
