Google has launched a free digital and artificial intelligence (AI) learning platform for Nigerians and other Africans, targeting three million people for skills development by 2030 as the continent faces a widening shortage of technology talent.

The initiative, known as Skilling Africa with Google, is designed to expand access to practical digital skills, with an initial target of 250,000 graduates by the end of 2026. It brings together more than 15 of the technology company’s training programmes in a single learning hub.

The platform is expected to provide opportunities for students, job seekers, entrepreneurs and developers to acquire skills in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, data analytics, digital marketing and business development.

Google’s Managing Director for Africa, Alex Okosi, said the initiative was aimed at strengthening the continent’s capacity to participate in the emerging AI economy.

“Africa has a significant opportunity to shape the future of AI, but unlocking that opportunity will require people with the skills to build, use, and innovate with these technologies,” Okosi said.

He added, “Through Skilling Africa with Google, we are bringing our skilling programmes together to make digital and AI learning easily accessible to more people across the continent. Our ambition to equip 3 million people by 2030 reflects our commitment to helping Africans build the skills they need to participate in and contribute to the digital economy.”

The new learning hub comes as Google estimates that more than 90 per cent of employers across Africa are struggling to find workers with practical AI and cloud computing skills, despite the continent’s projected $2.9 trillion economic opportunity from AI.

The company said the programme builds on its previous digital training initiatives, through which more than seven million young Africans have completed foundational digital skills programmes.

For Nigeria, the initiative offers another avenue for building the technical workforce required to support the country’s digital economy. The Federal Government’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, coordinated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), is similarly focused on developing a skilled workforce across areas including AI and machine learning, software development, cybersecurity, cloud computing and data science.

However, the availability of training opportunities has remained only one part of the challenge, as digital skills acquisition must also translate into employment, entrepreneurship and improved productivity.

Google said its platform was designed to address some of the barriers that have limited participation in online learning, particularly the cost of internet access, unreliable connectivity and the use of entry-level devices.

Learners can download lessons over Wi-Fi and complete them offline, while the platform is designed to load quickly on low-bandwidth connections and operate on smartphones and laptops without requiring a separate application.

The hub also features an AI-powered study companion, SCOUT, which helps learners understand unfamiliar concepts, answer questions and organise their study schedules around individual learning goals.

In addition, learners can monitor their progress through visual skill trees and earn verifiable badges upon completing courses, which can be presented to prospective employers or clients.

Google is also expanding language accessibility, with Hausa among the African languages being added to existing English, Swahili and Arabic options.

The platform includes Google Career Certificates for people seeking professional pathways in data analytics, IT support and cybersecurity; Hustle Academy for small business owners; and Google Cloud Skills for developers and technology professionals.

While the initiative could widen access to digital education, its broader economic impact will depend on the ability of participants to apply acquired skills to real-world problems and secure opportunities in the labour market.

The demand for AI talent is increasingly extending beyond technology companies, with financial services, agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing and public administration adopting digital tools to improve operations.

Meanwhile, for Nigerian businesses, a larger pool of digitally skilled workers could support automation, data-driven decision-making and the development of locally relevant technology solutions. However, employers would still need to provide practical experience and opportunities for learners to translate training into measurable workplace value.
