The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have intensified enforcement operations across the country to check illegal mining and ensure compliance with mining laws and safety regulations.
The latest operation was carried out in Nasarawa State in collaboration with the Federal Mines Officer and officials responsible for mining regulation in the state.
The NSCDC said the exercise was aimed at ensuring that mining operators complied with relevant laws, operational guidelines and safety requirements.
Speaking on the operations, the Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) Attah John Onoja, said enforcement activities would continue across the country without a predetermined sequence.
He warned mining operators against conducting activities without valid licences and the necessary regulatory approvals.
Onoja also stressed the need for regular monitoring and inspection of mining sites to ensure compliance with safety standards.
According to him, adherence to mining regulations is essential to preventing avoidable deaths, mine collapses and other operational hazards that could endanger workers and host communities.
The commander urged stakeholders in the mining sector to embrace lawful and responsible practices, warning that operators who violate relevant laws and regulations would face enforcement action.
The enforcement drive, according to the NSCDC, aligns with the commitment of its Commandant-General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, to support the policy objectives of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake.
The corps said the operations were also aimed at curbing illegal mining, preventing revenue losses, promoting safer mining practices and improving investor confidence in the solid minerals sector.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources and strengthening compliance with mining regulations.
