What began like an ordinary outing between two young friends in Kari community, located in Darazo local government area of Bauchi State, ended in tragedy and heartbreak for a family now searching for answers.

Seventeen-year-old Abdullahi Muhammad allegedly followed his friend, 18-year-old Aisanu Nura, to the Kari River on May 24, unaware that he would never return home alive.

Residents of the quiet community are still struggling to come to terms with the shocking incident, which has left many emotionally shaken. Abdullahi, described by neighbours as calm and respectful, reportedly drowned in the river under circumstances now being investigated by the police.

Even more painful for the family is the fact that his body has yet to be recovered from the river despite ongoing search efforts by local divers and security personnel.

For days, relatives and sympathisers have gathered around the riverbank, hoping for closure as emotions continue to run high in the community. Parents now warn their children about the dangers of bad company and unsafe visits to the river.

Confirming the incident yesterday, the spokesperson of the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Nafi’u Habib, said the suspect, Aisanu Nura, has been arrested and is undergoing interrogation in connection with suspected culpable homicide.

According to the police, efforts to recover Abdullahi’s body have so far been unsuccessful, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation.

The commissioner of police in the state, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed officers handling the matter to conduct a professional investigation to uncover the true circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.

Meanwhile, the people of Kari community remain united in grief, mourning a young life cut short in a tragedy that has left many unanswered questions.
