AA Rejects Deregistration Of Five Parties Ahead Of 2027 Polls

The Action Alliance (AA) has rejected the court-ordered deregistration of five political parties, warning that the move could undermine democratic inclusion and disrupt preparations for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Chief Barr. Kenneth Udeze, in Abuja , the party expressed concern over the timing of the judgment, noting that political mobilisation and preparations for the next elections were already underway.

While affirming its respect for the judiciary and the rule of law, AA said the ruling raised serious questions about democratic inclusion and the integrity of the electoral process.

The party argued that multiparty democracy, guaranteed under Section 40 of the Constitution, should be strengthened rather than weakened.

“Democracy requires options. Multiparty democracy is the bedrock of our Constitution. Reducing the number of registered parties mid-cycle narrows voter choice and weakens political competition. Nigerians deserve more platforms to express their aspirations, not fewer,” the statement said.

AA warned that deregistering parties when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had begun preparations for the 2027 elections could disenfranchise members, destroy years of party-building and create avoidable tension.

According to the party, electoral reforms and compliance issues are better handled outside active election cycles with due process and adequate notice.

“If parties have compliance issues, the remedy should strengthen them, not eliminate them. The courts, INEC and political actors must prioritise dialogue over deregistration during election seasons,” it said.

The party called on the judiciary and INEC to consider a stay or review of the judgment until after the 2027 elections to preserve electoral stability.

It also urged the National Assembly to review laws on party deregistration to prevent mid-cycle disruptions and called on Nigerians and civil society groups to defend multiparty democracy.

AA said it stood in solidarity with the affected parties and their members and pledged to work with stakeholders to protect Nigeria’s democratic space.
