Abia State government has intensified its response to the flood alert by the federal government in the state even as the rain has become heavier since last week.
The commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu stated this in a statement made available to the media in Umuahia, the capital yesterday.
This followed a video circulating on the social media showing flooding within a residential compound along the ongoing Owerrinta Road reconstruction corridor.
The statement said the government assured the public that the situation is receiving attention and will be adequately addressed as part of the ongoing road construction
It observed that preliminary observations indicated that the affected location has a long-standing topographical challenge arising from its naturally undulating terrain.
It also noted that the Government is a well aware that the current public discourse surrounding the incident has unfortunately attracted political interpretation.
”However, the government remains focused on facts, the welfare of the residents, and the successful delivery of quality infrastructure rather than political distractions.
”Residents of the area are encouraged to remain calm and assured that the government will work with the Ministry of Works, and the contract to ensure that the issue is comprehensively resolved.”
It added that the administration in state remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering durable, people-centred infrastructure while protecting the lives, property, and interests of the residents.
