The Abia State government has constituted a panel of inquiry to investigate causes of the recent collapse of two buildings in the state.

The incidents occurred on June 7 at Obingwu and Chukwunyere Street by Osusu Road, Aba and Aba North local government areas respectively.

The commissioner for lands and housing, Chaka Chukwumerije, inaugurated the panel which has nine members.

He said: “The incidences have brought to the fore the need for a review of our building control practices,” adding that the panel has four weeks to conduct the investigations.
Chukwumerije, who listed 12 points as terms of reference for the panel, said the exercise is one of the steps the present administration had taken to check similar incidents.

Responding, the chairman of the panel said they felt deeply concerned about such incident, especially when they could have been avoided.

“Majority of us are from the build industry. We know and understand the terrain very well. We know what ought to and not to be done in the industry. We will do the job diligently,” the chairman assured.
