By Gbodiyan Oluwakemi Karen, Abuja

Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, has directed the commissioner for Tertiary Education and the managing director of the Greater Aba Development Authority to commence the search for a temporary site for a study centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Aba.

The directive followed a request by the vice-vhancellor of NOUN, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, for policy direction on the establishment of a study centre in the commercial city.

Governor Otti said Aba, being a major commercial hub, cannot afford to be without a NOUN study centre, noting the growing relevance of open and distance learning in expanding access to education.

He added that the state government would provide the necessary support to ensure the successful establishment of the centre.

The governor also directed the commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Uche, to assess the existing NOUN study centre in Umuahia with a view to improving its facilities.

Earlier, Prof. Uduma, during a courtesy visit to the governor in Nvosi, Isiala-Ngwa South local government area, said the establishment of study centres promotes access and inclusiveness in education.

He noted that Aba, as one of the largest cities in the country, deserves such access, adding that NOUN is open to partnerships that enhance educational development.
