Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers has begun a statewide sensitisation of the people on the ongoing registration for Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and National Identification Number (NIN).
The chairman of the council, HRH Eze Linus Nto Mba, stated this while speaking to newsmen in Umuahia, the state capital, yesterday, saying the council is worried about low turn up for the registrations.
He said the council would also assess the availability and adequacy of materials, logistics, equipment, and personnel for the registrations by visiting the relevant offices and registration centres.
His words: “As fathers and custodians of the people, we are worried and pained by the low number of people so far registered in both exercises despite the huge population of the state.”
“We have, therefore, resolved to take responsibility for mobilizing eligible citizens, particularly those aged 18 and above who are yet to register to do so without further delay”
The chairman who, explained that the initiative is non-political, assured that the council would continue to mobilize the grassroots for civic and democratic developments.
Reacting to the initiative, the member representing Ohafia South constituency in the House of Assembly,Kalu Mba Nwoke described it as a welcome development, pledging his support for the council.
‎Nwoke, who is the House Committee chairman on Environment and Urban Renewal, urged the people to participate fully in the registrations to avail themselves of the many benefits.
