Abia State Ministry of Transport yesterday launched a rider’s permit and enumeration exercise for tricycle operators, motorcyclists, and commercial vehicle drivers in the state.
At the event in Umuahia, the state capital, the commissioner for transport, Chief Godswill Nwanorue said the exercise will smoke out criminals and underaged operators from the sector.
“Apart from the security features of the permit, it will equally generate revenue for the state as well as increase the internally generated revenue,” he said.
Nwanorue, who said the exercise is for the good and security of lives and property of the residents, added that the operators have been given one month to comply with the directive.
Speaking also, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Mrs Ijeoma Okere commended the commissioner for realising the project, noting that it would give identification and legal backing to the operators.
Responding on behalf of other transport union leaders, the chairman, Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria, Mr Kingsley Ekeleme, assured the ministry of their partnership to ensure the success of the project.
