Winger Paul Samson was the standout performer as his goal and assist helped Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City from Lagos in a highly entertaining Nigeria Premier Football League match at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.
The Matchday 35 fixture lived up to the pre-match hype, with both sides chasing a continental ticket displaying mesmerising football artistry that showcased the wealth of talent in the Nigerian league, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats.
Abia Warriors’ manager, Imama Amapakabo, made just one change to the side that faced Bendel Insurance in Benin, with Fatai Abdullahi replacing Casmir Azubuike.
The game began explosively, featuring end-to-end action. The Warriors nearly took the lead in the early stages, but Valentine Ugwu failed to capitalise from the 18-yard box after being put through on goal.
The home side deservedly took the lead in the 20th minute when Paul Samson headed in Innocent Gabriel’s free kick.
However, the visitors were undeterred and pressed for an equaliser, which came in the 36th minute. A moment of laxity from the Warriors allowed Remi Adeoye time and space to shoot from 30 yards, finding the back of the net for Ikorodu City.
Umu Chineke, as the Warriors are affectionately known, maintained their composure and began to create their own chances. Their efforts paid off just before half-time when Paul Samson turned from scorer to provider. His defence-splitting pass found Valentine Ugwu, who stylishly chipped the ball over the on-rushing Ikorodu City goalkeeper, Michael Atata, for the second goal that ultimately proved to be the winner.
The Warriors had another goal disallowed just two minutes into the second half when Fatai Abdullahi’s powerful shot from a corner kick hit the back of the net, only to be ruled out for offside.
The visitors attempted to find another goal through occasional counter-attacks, but the Warriors’ defence held firm.
As the game intensified, the Warriors’ bench made substitutions, introducing Casmir Azubuike and Shedrack Asiegbu for Suraj Lawal and Fatai Abdullahi, followed by Chindi Merpring and Ebenezer Omoge for Emeka Obioma and Paul Samson, in a bid to see out the match.
Next up for Abia Warriors is an away fixture against Rivers United in Port Harcourt.
