Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has urged both state and federal governments to take urgent and decisive action against the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, following the brutal killing of one of its distinguished academic staff, Mohammed Sani Suleiman.
Suleiman, who joined ABU’s Department of Business Administration in 1998, recently assumed the position of regional manager, North West, at Union Bank Plc, overseeing the bank’s operations across the North-Western region.
He was on an official assignment visiting bank branches along the Funtua-Gusau Road when kidnappers attacked and fatally shot him.
According to a statement by the university management, the tragic incident was described as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the growing threat to lives across the nation.
“His death is a profound loss to our community and a clear signal of the dangerous insecurity challenges confronting our country,” the statement read.
The university expressed deep condolences to Suleiman’s family and assured that efforts are underway to support them during this difficult period.
ABU emphasised that the loss of Suleiman should galvanise collective action from all sectors of society. “We call on the government to implement effective security measures that protect citizens and tackle the root causes of violence and crime,” the statement added.
The university also urged that the victims’ families be supported adequately, including through compensation and other forms of assistance.
The institution further appealed to civil society, citizens, and authorities to unite and demand meaningful change to restore peace and safety in Nigeria.
“Our silence in the face of such tragedies can no longer be sustained,” the statement read.
