Ahead of the February 21, 2026, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) election, the chairmanship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dr Obina Simon, has pledged to strengthen the council’s revenue base if elected.
Obina said he would not rely on the monthly allocation from the federation account.
The candidate said he would increase the internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the council to enable him to execute developmental projects.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja yesterday, Obina, who accused the incumbent chairman, Christopher Maikalangu, of poor performance and abandoning infrastructure development, said he had the credentials and experience to transform the area council.
Obina decried the high level of racketeering in the area council and promised to digitalise the IGR process to curb corruption and save money for the council.
“What we realised that is happening in AMAC is that some portion of revenue is used to compensate some politicians, I don’t have a problem with that. There should be an arrangement with the government; it has to be just. You don’t take 70 per cent, and the council takes 30 per cent – no, it doesn’t make sense.
“We will work with the consultants, because we are creating jobs. A consultant must declare what they have collected, and we agree that it must be digitised. We have to find out what the consultants have collected. I can be in my office, press the screen, and see what the consultants have collected.
“We must digitalise it to check corruption. Any money collected must be deposited into the council’s account. You cannot just say this is what I collected,” Obina said.
