The federal government has reassured Nigerians and the international community that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors, despite a recent travel advisory issued by the Embassy of the United States.

The US Embassy had advised its staff and their families to avoid non-official travel to military sites and government facilities within the FCT, citing unspecified global security concerns.

In a statement issued to Jjurnalists on Monday in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said while the government respects the right of foreign missions to issue travel notices, the advisory does not reflect the reality on the ground in Abuja.

“The Federal Government recognizes and respects the right of foreign missions, including the U.S. Embassy, to issue travel advisories to their citizens. However, it is important to state categorically that Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike,” the statement read.

Idris emphasised that Nigeria’s security agencies were operating proactively and around the clock to maintain peace and public safety across the capital city and the country at large.

He highlighted significant progress in detecting, preventing, and neutralising threats in recent months.

“We understand that the U.S. advisory is based on general global developments and does not reflect any imminent or specific threat within the FCT. However, we reiterate to all diplomatic missions, investors, development partners, and the general public that there is no cause for alarm,” he added.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to sustaining Abuja’s reputation as one of the safest capitals in the world, stressing that the nation’s intelligence and security agencies remain on high alert and fully prepared to respond to any emerging threat.

The minister urged Nigerians to go about their lawful activities without fear, while also encouraging vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.

“We encourage citizens to conduct their lawful activities without fear, while also remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities,” Idris stated.
