Adamawa Partners Kanu On Football Talent Hunt, Heart Screening

The Adamawa State Government is partnering with former Super Eagles captain, Kanu Nwankwo, and the Kanu Heart Foundation to organise a statewide grassroots football talent hunt across the 21 local government areas, alongside free cardiovascular screening for residents.

The initiative was unveiled during a visit by the Nigerian football legend and his delegation to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri at the Government House, Yola.

Under the partnership, the proposed football talent hunt will be integrated into the Governor’s Cup tournament, while the Kanu Heart Foundation will conduct free medical screenings and organise a six-kilometre health walk to promote cardiovascular awareness.

Governor Fintiri said his administration had accepted the proposal and pledged the state government’s full support for the programme.

He also directed the immediate constitution of an organising committee to coordinate preparations and ensure the successful implementation of the initiative across the state.

The grassroots tournament is expected to identify promising young footballers from communities across Adamawa’s 21 local government areas, with the final match planned to mark the inauguration of the state’s newly constructed sports stadium, which is nearing completion.

As part of efforts to ensure a transparent and merit-based selection process, international football scouts are expected to monitor the tournament and identify outstanding players, particularly undiscovered talents from rural communities.

The selection process is expected to focus strictly on sporting ability and potential, without political interference or favouritism.

Beyond football development, Kanu said his foundation would use the final stage of the tournament to provide free cardiovascular screening for residents.

The medical outreach will screen participants for hypertension, high cholesterol and other underlying cardiovascular conditions, while creating greater public awareness about heart health and the importance of early detection.

Kanu said the Kanu Heart Foundation has facilitated more than 700 open-heart surgeries since its establishment, describing the Adamawa initiative as another opportunity to extend its humanitarian activities to more Nigerians.

He said the development taking place in Adamawa encouraged the foundation to partner with the state, adding that outstanding players selected from the 21 local government areas would be given opportunities for exposure to professional football clubs.

The partnership is expected to combine grassroots sports development, youth talent discovery and preventive healthcare, while providing young footballers across Adamawa with a platform to showcase their abilities before professional scouts.
