The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) has demanded an explanation from the Presidency over the continued absence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from Nigeria.
The ADC PCC, in a statement signed by its Director, Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Sunday, said the President had yet to return to the country six days after the expiration of his originally announced three-week vacation.
According to the statement, the vacation was expected to end on September 21, 2026.
The opposition group expressed concern over the absence of information on the President’s whereabouts and the circumstances surrounding the reported extension of his stay abroad.
It called on the Presidency to provide information on Tinubu’s current location, the reason for his prolonged absence and the constitutional arrangements governing the country during the period.
The ADC also asked the Presidency to clarify the status of the President’s vacation and the constitutional basis for the current arrangement, particularly following the extension beyond the period earlier communicated to Nigerians.
The statement said the issue was important given the economic challenges, insecurity and hardship confronting the country.
The ADC further raised questions over reports that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, had continued to represent the President at official functions.
It said the arrangement did not address what it described as the fundamental question of who was constitutionally and effectively in charge of the affairs of the country while the President remained outside Nigeria.
The ADC urged the Presidency to provide what it described as a comprehensive and unambiguous explanation to Nigerians, saying that continued silence could fuel speculation and public anxiety.
“The office of the President is a public trust. Nigerians who elected President Tinubu are entitled to know where their President is and, more importantly, who is exercising presidential authority while he remains outside the country,” the statement said.
The party added that Nigerians were entitled to transparency and accountability concerning the exercise of presidential authority.
