The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has downplayed the influence of the “Rainbow Coalition,” a political movement associated with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party said the movement, which has been described in some political circles as a dominant force in Rivers politics, would not determine the outcome of future elections in the state.
Speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt, the ADC chairman in Rivers State, Dr. Chukwudi Dimkpa, said democracy is rooted in competition and that all political parties have the constitutional right to seek the mandate of the people.
He stressed that the ADC is not focused on any political bloc or individual, but on building a strong grassroots structure and presenting credible candidates to voters.
“While we welcome the emergence of new political movements, the ADC remains focused on building a strong grassroots structure, presenting credible candidates, and offering practical solutions to the challenges facing Nigerians,” Dimkpa said.
He added that Nigerians are becoming more interested in competence, credibility, and capacity rather than political alignments or affiliations.
According to him, the party believes that its chances in 2027 will depend on its ability to present a clear vision and connect with voters across communities.
“We believe that by presenting a clear vision and demonstrating our commitment to good governance, the ADC will remain a formidable force in the political landscape. Ultimately, power belongs to the people, not political parties,” he said.
Dimkpa maintained that political realignments are normal in a democracy, but insisted that the ADC’s core values of internal democracy, inclusiveness, transparency, and national development remain unchanged.
He expressed confidence that Rivers voters are politically sophisticated and capable of choosing leaders based on merit rather than sentiment.
“We believe Rivers people are politically sophisticated enough to look beyond ethnic sentiments and support the candidate who offers the best roadmap for the future,” he stated.
On concerns about federal influence in elections, Dimkpa said the party would strengthen its grassroots structures and invest in voter education, election monitoring, and agent training to safeguard its electoral prospects.
He also called on institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations, the media, and security agencies to play active roles in ensuring credible elections in 2027.
Dimkpa urged INEC to uphold its constitutional responsibility of conducting free, fair, and transparent elections, adding that public confidence in the electoral process remains critical to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
He said the credibility of the 2027 elections would be vital not just for political parties but for the country’s democratic future, stressing that every vote must count and every voter must matter.
