The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland has called for divine intervention following the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, expressing deep concern over the rising insecurity in parts of the South-West and across Nigeria.

The clerics said they had commenced special prayers, supplications and spiritual engagements across Yorubaland, seeking Allah’s intervention for the restoration of peace, security and harmony in affected communities.

In a statement issued in Ibadan on Thursday, the League said it was deeply saddened by the recent wave of abductions and other violent crimes, describing them as unacceptable and contrary to Islamic teachings.

The statement was signed by top Islamic leaders, including the Chief Imam of Ekiti State, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere; Vice President and Chief Imam of Ogun State, Sheikh Saadullah Bamgbola; and the Chief Imam of Oyo State, Sheikh AbdulGaniy Agbotomokekere, among others.

The League noted that it was particularly disturbed by reports of the abduction of 39 students and seven teachers in some communities within Oriire Local Government Area.

It stressed that Islam places high value on the sanctity of human life, security and social harmony, warning that such criminal acts undermine the moral fabric of society.

Quoting from the Qur’an, the clerics said the killing or harm of innocent people is condemned in strong terms, adding that safeguarding lives is a core religious obligation.

The group urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted victims and bring perpetrators to justice without delay.

They also called on parents, teachers, religious leaders, youth groups and community stakeholders to remain vigilant and support security efforts aimed at protecting schools and public institutions.

The League further appealed for greater unity and cooperation between citizens and lawful authorities in tackling insecurity, stressing that collective action is needed to restore safety across communities.

In the same statement, the clerics congratulated President Bola Tinubu on his third year in office, acknowledging ongoing economic reforms despite current national challenges.

They prayed for divine guidance, strength and wisdom for the President, while expressing hope that Nigeria would overcome its present difficulties and achieve lasting peace and prosperity.
