The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the interpretation of a recent Court of Appeal ruling by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the electoral body of yielding to political pressure from the federal government.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described INEC’s position as contradictory and inconsistent with both facts and logic.
It further alleged that the commission’s stance reflects a broader attempt to weaken opposition parties and entrench a one-party system in Nigeria.
“We reject INEC’s interpretation of the Court of Appeal ruling,” the statement said. “We knew that INEC was being pressured by a government that has become jittery from the ADC’s rising momentum, even in the face of its relentless assault on all opposition parties.”
The ADC claimed that INEC’s explanation of the appellate court’s decision “flies in the face of both facts and reason,” adding that it would soon provide a detailed rebuttal to clarify what it described as contradictions in the commission’s position.
The party also accused INEC of abandoning its neutrality, warning that the commission’s actions suggest it has “chosen to side with the government against the Nigerian people.” Although it did not specify the exact areas of disagreement with the electoral body, the ADC insisted that the implications of INEC’s stance could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
Raising concerns about the broader political climate, the party alleged that the current administration is unsettled by what it called the ADC’s growing influence and has intensified efforts to stifle opposition voices. According to the statement, these efforts are part of a wider strategy to consolidate power and limit political competition.
Despite its strong criticism, the ADC said it is still reviewing its options and would announce its next steps in due course. The party did not rule out possible legal or political actions in response to the situation.
“We are currently reviewing our options, and we shall make these known soon,” the statement added.
The party also called on its members and supporters, as well as the general public, to remain calm and resolute as developments unfold. It urged Nigerians to stay engaged and await further directives from its leadership.
“Meanwhile, we call on our members and all Nigerians to remain steadfast as they await further directives,” the statement said, ending on a note of optimism: “Nigeria is rising. ADC is rising.”
