Banjo Adekunle has once again demonstrated his dominance in table tennis by defeating Saheed Olatilewa in straight sets, 11–5, 11–9, to retain the Henrietta Ovuede Table Tennis Trophy.

The victory marks Adekunle’s third consecutive title in the annual staff tournament, which began as a modest in-house contest at Chrisland School, Victoria Garden City (VGC), expanded this year to include staff from the Lekki branch of the school.

Adekunle, a French educator at the school, has now won three straight titles after finishing runner-up in the inaugural edition.

Speaking after his victory, Adekunle expressed gratitude and joy: “I thank God for making it possible for me to come first in this fourth edition. In the first edition, I came second, but since then I have been winning. I’m so happy to defend my trophy again.”

Adekunle credited his style for the success. “I’ve been playing table tennis since childhood. I don’t play to impress anyone. I play to win. I’m a pusher, a defender. I focus on the ball and avoid mistakes. My opponents are fighters, but with tactics and God’s help, I was able to defend the cup.”

Founder of the competition, Mrs. Henrietta Ovuede, reflected on the journey of the tournament: “It started small, just for teachers to unwind and relieve stress. Over the years, it has grown bigger. Last year was the height of it, and this year we extended it to Lekki schools. Next year, we hope to move it to the Island and open it up to other schools at a neutral venue.”

Executive Head of Schools (Business Development and Communications), Chrisland Schools, Dr Jide Onigbogi, praised the initiative.

He said, “What began four years ago as a modest in-house competition has grown into a vibrant tournament involving staff across Chrisland schools. This remarkable growth is a testament to vision, dedication, and unity.

“Sports promote fitness, wellness, and camaraderie, and this event embodies all those values,” he added.
