Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has condemned the reported attack on the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, in Ekiti State, describing the incident as an act of violence and political intimidation.
Adeyanju, who said he was informed of the incident by one of Sowore’s aides, expressed concern over reports that a police officer attached to the activist was disarmed during the attack.
In a statement reacting to the incident, the lawyer called on security agencies to launch an immediate investigation, guarantee Sowore’s safety and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“I have just been informed by one of the aides to Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), of his violent attack in Ekiti State.
“I am concerned by reports that the police officer attached to him was disarmed during the incident. I strongly condemn this brazen act of violence and political intimidation.
“There is absolutely no place for such lawlessness in a democracy,” Adeyanju said.
He urged the relevant security agencies to take urgent steps to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and hold the perpetrators accountable.
“I call on the relevant security agencies to immediately investigate the incident, ensure Mr Sowore’s safety and bring all those responsible to justice,” he added.
LEADERSHIP reports that Sowore had earlier alleged that armed thugs attacked and kidnapped him inside a restaurant in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
The AAC presidential candidate raised the alarm in a Facebook post on Friday, October 30, writing, “Thugs just attacked us inside a restaurant in Ado Ekiti.”
An update subsequently published on his page claimed that armed thugs had kidnapped him, adding that his whereabouts were unknown.
The posts triggered concerns over the activist’s safety, particularly following the subsequent claim that his location could not be established.
However, details surrounding the alleged attack, including the identities of the suspected assailants, the circumstances leading to the incident and the number of people involved, were not immediately available.
