Nigeria’s electricity regulator, NERC, has warned all players in the power sector to follow the rules to the letter—especially when getting licenses for grid-connected projects.
The call came during a key meeting with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma in Abuja, underscoring NERC’s role as an independent watchdog for fairness and transparency.
The governor visited NERC to congratulate the new chairman on his appointment and discuss teamwork to boost Imo’s electricity market.
Their discussions showed both sides keen on a partnership for sustainable power growth in the state.
Uzodinma sought NERC’s help for a smooth state power market and reliable supply to drive economic progress.
“We need your support to make our power market work well,” he said and added, “Please step in to strengthen efforts for stable and reliable power—it’s critical for growth and development in Imo State.”
The chairman of NERC, Dr Musiliu Oseni commended the governor’s proactive push. “I commend you for your strong interest and commitment to better electricity in Imo State,” he replied.
“Providing subnational electricity services is a fundamental government duty, and you’re taking decisive steps.”
Reaffirming NERC’s support for state initiatives, Dr Oseni stressed his agency’s limits: “As an independent regulator, our responsibility is to ensure fairness, transparency, and regulatory compliance across the sector.”
“Adhere strictly to established regulatory processes, particularly with respect to obtaining the necessary licensing and approvals for any grid-connected power projects.”
The chairman also pledged, “NERC is committed to supporting Imo State within the bounds of its regulatory mandate.”
Additionally, he pushed for licensing Imo’s state electricity subsidiary company.
“This will strengthen customer protection frameworks and enable proper administration and remittance of regulatory charges to the state authority,” he explained.
