The Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals are set for a thrilling encounter as Nigeria’s prolific goal scorers, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, prepare to challenge the unblemished record of Algeria’s goalkeeper, Luca Zidane.
The 27-year-old, son of legendary French footballer Zinedine Zidane, is the sole first-choice custodian among the final eight teams to have kept a clean sheet in every match played so far in the tournament.
Zidane’s impressive run includes shutouts against Sudan and Burkina Faso in the group stage, followed by another clean sheet in their dramatic extra-time victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the last 16. His famous father, along with other family members, has been a visible presence in the stands, cheering him on.
“It is special when your family come to watch,” remarked Zidane, who began his career at Real Madrid B and now plays for Spanish second-tier side Granada. Despite being born in France and representing them at youth level, Zidane chose to play for Algeria, the birthplace of his grandparents, making his debut in a 2026 World Cup qualifier last November. He was promoted to the starting lineup for AFCON after an injury to Alexis Guendoez.
“I am proud to represent Algeria and play in the Africa Cup of Nations. It is a great experience,” he stated, adding that he is determined to forge his own path, independent of his famous surname.
However, the task awaiting him in Marrakesh on Saturday will be formidable. Nigeria’s former African Player of the Year award-winner, Osimhen, and the dynamic Lookman have been in scintillating form, each netting three goals to lead Nigeria’s attack. The Super Eagles are the tournament’s leading scorers with 12 goals, boasting a potent frontline that also includes Akor Adams.
Algeria, under Bosnian coach Vladimir Petkovic, have overcome successive group-stage exits and will be buoyed by Adil Boulbina’s thunderbolt that eliminated DR Congo. Historically, Algeria has been a “bogey team” for Nigeria, with a record of four wins and two draws from nine previous meetings, including a dominant 5-1 victory during their 1990 AFCON-winning campaign.
While Nigeria’s attacking prowess is undeniable, coach Eric Chelle will be concerned by his team’s defensive record, having conceded four goals – the most among the eight quarter-finalists. This sets the stage for a captivating clash between Algeria’s resilient defence and Nigeria’s formidable forward line.
