The newly elected President of the All Africa Students’ Union, Enyinnaya Osisiogu, has visited the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, stating that the union associates itself with the governor’s education policies and programmes.
During the visit in Umuahia, the state capital, Osisiogu, who was accompanied by a delegation of union officials, explained that the visit was a homecoming for him.
He said, “I came to present myself to you, Your Excellency, having emerged as the first Nigerian to be elected to this office since the establishment of the union in the early 1970s.”
The Abia State born leader said he was very happy and proud to identify with Otti’s administration, noting that it had made him and other students from the state hold their heads high.
“So, this is us thanking you for everything you have done in the state and, of course, for making us proud today to say that we are from the state.
“In all of the 43 countries I visited during the campaigns, I told them that I come from a state that is poised to invest over $150 million in education next year.”
In his response, Otti described education as the fulcrum of societal development and restated his administration’s commitment to prioritising the education sector.
“In the last two years, we have dedicated 20 per cent of our budget to education. This is in recognition of the fact that it is the most important industry that feeds other industries,” he said.
He recalled his recent visit to Abia State University, Uturu, where he found hostel facilities in a deplorable condition, to which the government responded immediately by commencing their rehabilitation.
The governor, who congratulated Osisiogu on his emergence, urged him to remain steadfast in the values that earned him the victory and pledged the government’s support.
