Day Two of the ongoing 2026 CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, proved to be a remarkable day for Team Nigeria, as the nation delivered impressive performances across several events, securing a haul of gold, silver, and bronze medals.

World record holder Tobi Amusan spearheaded the medal rush, storming to gold in the women’s 100m hurdles to claim Nigeria’s first gold medal of the championships. Adaobi Tabugbo also impressed in the same event, producing a strong finish to secure the bronze medal, ensuring Nigeria occupied two podium positions.

Team Nigeria continued their celebrations by clinching a second gold medal on Day Two through the Mixed 4x400m Relay team. The quartet of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson, and veteran Patience Okon-George combined brilliantly to finish first with a winning time of 3:16.41, triumphing over Botswana, Kenya, and home favourites, Ghana.

Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, commended the athletes for their determination and outstanding representation of the country.

“We are extremely proud of the performances of our athletes so far in Ghana. Tobi Amusan’s gold medal and the overall showing of Team Nigeria in just two days reflect the resilience, talent and hard work of our sportsmen and women. We know that there’s more to come and we’re rooting for all of our athletes,” Mallam Dikko stated.

Nigeria’s medal tally on Day Two also included Sade Olatoye, who secured silver in the women’s Hammer Throw with a best mark of 69.60m.

In the men’s 100m final, Ezeakor ran an excellent race to secure a bronze medal behind Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana.

There was also success for Rosemary Chukwuma, who was controversially awarded a silver medal in the women’s 100m final. Replays appeared to show her crossing the finish line first for gold, only for officials to rule otherwise.

Nigeria heads into Day Three with vigour, belief, and the promise of further success.
