President of the Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria (TFN), Tayo Popoola, has praised the country’s athletes following their impressive medal haul at the ongoing African Taekwondo Championship in Mali.

The continental event, which has attracted competitors from more than 35 countries, features several top-ranked athletes, including Olympic and world champions.

Popoola expressed delight with Nigeria’s performances, describing the athletes’ showing as one that had surpassed expectations.

She reserved special praise for Ability Udom, who claimed a gold medal in the women’s K44 57kg para-taekwondo category to boost Nigeria’s campaign.

Speaking on the team’s progress, Popoola acknowledged the high level of competition but commended the Nigerian contingent for their resilience and determination.

“The event is still ongoing and it has been a very tough competition,” Popoola said.

“We have won two bronze medals and one gold through Ability Udom, who competed in a difficult category but performed exceptionally well.

“Joel also featured in the heavyweight division, which was another very challenging event. We came up against several Olympic and world champions, and it was a good contest.

“Chidinma won a bronze medal, while Salaudeen Abdulazeez also secured bronze for Nigeria.”

Popoola noted that the scale and standard of the championship made Nigeria’s achievements even more commendable.

“This championship is huge because we have more than 35 countries competing here, and we understand what that means,” she said.

“Many nations arrived with delegations of about 30 athletes, so the competition is extremely intense, but Nigerian athletes are giving their very best.”

Despite the strong start, the TFN president said the team remains focused on adding to its medal tally as the championship progresses.

“The celebration continues because we are looking forward to winning more medals,” she added.

“We still have Nigerian athletes ready to compete against the best from across Africa.

“Some countries came with world champions, but our athletes are equal to the challenge and prepared to face them. It is tough, but I believe we will do well.”

Nigeria’s encouraging start has raised hopes of further success as the championship enters its decisive stages.
