A documentary, “Africans in Beijing”, co-produced by Nigeria and China, has captured widespread attention across Africa since its recent debut.

Produced by StarTimes Media, the show is currently airing on multiple leading television networks throughout the continent.

A statement issued by Startimes Media explained that each 10-minute episode offers an intimate glimpse into Beijing through the eyes of young Africans from diverse backgrounds.

From a Malagasy geology doctoral student performing folk songs on stage, to a Kenyan exchange photographer framing the city’s iconic red walls and grey rooftops, and a Nigerian host sharing Chinese stories in Hausa—the documentary paints a vivid portrait of cross-cultural connection.

“Brian, a Kenyan international student, finds inspiration in Beijing’s ancient hutongs and modern streets. “Red is the underlying colour of this city,” he says, “while grey represents the texture of daily life.”

Through social media, he shares his evolving vision of Beijing with audiences back home.

“Mandranto from Madagascar, a PhD candidate at the China University of Geosciences, leads a double life. By day, he analyses mineral spectra in the lab; by night, he plays guitar in Wudaokou’s vibrant bar district, blending Chinese folk melodies with songs from his homeland. “Spectra are the fingerprints of stones,” he reflects. “Every stone has its own unique spectrum, just as every person has their own unique song.”

“Nuru from Nigeria, a Hausa-language host, has turned his life in Beijing into a mission of cultural bridge-building. Whether cycling through city parks, travelling thousands of kilometres on high-speed rail, or exploring the innovation hub of E-Town International Circuit, Nuru actively engages with Chinese culture and documents it all through compelling storytelling.

“As a flagship component of StarTimes’ Nigeria-China Cultural Exchange project, Africans in Beijing adopts an innovative narrative approach, “African perspectives and Chinese stories.”

Co-produced by Nigerian and Chinese teams, the series authentically captures Beijing’s urban landscape while tailoring its style to Nigerian viewing habits. The goal is to present Nigerian audiences with a real, vibrant, and multifaceted Beijing: not only a city steeped in history but also a dynamic international metropolis brimming with opportunity.

“Through its unique blend of personal journeys and cultural discovery, Africans in Beijing stands as a testament to the power of media in TV fostering mutual understanding between Africa and China.”The statement read.
