The All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) was established in 2014 in partnership with the African Union Commission to honour and celebrate musical excellence across the African continent and to project African culture globally. From its first edition in Nigeria, the event has been deeply rooted in the continent’s creative scene, showcasing the diversity of African music and positioning culture as a unifying force.

AFRIMA’s early history saw Nigeria host the awards for several consecutive years, reinforcing the country’s position as a creative powerhouse and cultural hub for the continent. After years of hosting in other African nations, Lagos was chosen again to host the 9th edition, rescheduled to January 7–11, 2026—an affirmation of Nigeria’s central role in African music and culture.

The aims and objectives of AFRIMA go beyond recognising artistry. Its mission is to honour talent, elevate African music’s global presence, support emerging artists, and celebrate cultural diversity. By doing so, it helps foster cross-continental collaborations, cultural diplomacy, and economic integration within Africa’s creative economies.

Over the years, AFRIMA has evolved into a multi-faceted platform that includes music awards, festivals, industry summits, and networking spaces. These ancillary activities attract artists, producers, executives, media professionals, and fans from across Africa and the diaspora, generating tourism demand and spotlighting host cities.

The positive impact on tourism in Nigeria—especially Lagos—is tangible. For the 2026 edition, more than 1,200 artistes, delegates and production professionals converged on Lagos, bringing international attention and boosting occupancy in hotels, demand for local transport, and patronage of restaurants and entertainment venues.

Beyond immediate economic benefits, AFRIMA enhances Nigeria’s global cultural profile, positioning Lagos as a vibrant destination for international events and cultural travellers alike. Through its programming—such as the AFRIMA Music Village and welcome soirées—it creates immersive experiences that encourage extended stays and cross-sector engagement, which are key drivers of tourism growth.

In summary, AFRIMA’s evolution from a continental awards ceremony into an influential cultural festival has significantly strengthened Nigeria’s tourism landscape by promoting cultural exchange, driving hospitality industry demand, and affirming the country as a destination where Africa’s creative excellence is celebrated and experienced.
