The stage is set for a highly anticipated encounter as Nigeria’s D’Tigers set to face The Lions of Senegal in the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2025 AfroBasket, later today, August 20.

Senegal secured their place in the knockout stage after a commanding 78–65 victory over South Sudan in the playoff round, setting up an exciting matchup against Nigeria, who topped Group B.

The Lions have a storied history in the tournament, proudly claiming five championship titles (1968, 1972, 1978, 1980, 1997), along with six silver medals and five bronze medals. This year marks their 30th participation in the AfroBasket.

In contrast, Nigeria is making its 20th appearance at the championship. The D’Tigers celebrated a gold medal win in 2015, alongside silver medals in 1997, 1999, 2003, and 2017, as well as bronze medals in 1995, 2005, and 2011.

The Nigerian team has shown outstanding form thus far, dominating Group B with victories over Madagascar (77–59), Tunisia (87–66), and Cameroon (99–90) respectively.

Senegal also demonstrated their strength during the group stage, achieving wins against Uganda (88–53) and Mali (84–70), although they suffered a defeat to Egypt (91–77) before bouncing back with success against South Sudan in the playoffs.

Historical records favour Nigeria; their last encounter in a knockout stage occurred during the 2015 AfroBasket semi-finals, where the D’Tigers narrowly defeated Senegal 88–79 after overtime, eventually claiming their first championship by overcoming Angola in the final.

Both teams are eager for success, not only for a place in the semi-finals but also for the greater prize of automatic qualification for the FIBA Basketball World Championship.

Adding to the excitement of the match is the recent victory of Nigeria’s D’Tigress over Senegal in the semi-finals of the Women’s AfroBasket earlier this month, where they went on to lift the trophy.

This match carries sentimental significance, as Stan Okoye remains the sole member of the 2015 title-winning squad still on the team, highlighting his longevity and leadership.
Nigeria will look to leverage Okoye’s experience, along with the depth of their squad, as they aim to triumph over their West African rivals.
