Again, 10 Die in Niger Boat Mishap

A boat mishap has claimed 10 lives in Zangoro Bassa/Kukoki ward terminal to Gijiwa/Kato ward terminal in Shiroro local government area of Niger State. 

It was gathered that 34 people  were on board. Sources said 24 survivors were identified, with efforts ongoing last night to gather complete information on those whose bodies were still in the water. 

A statement by NSEMA public relations officer Hussain Ibrahim said it received report of a boat mishap in Shiroro.

He said;  “Tragically, 10 lives were lost, including Farida Muntari, Sharhabila Sagir, Abubakar Sadiq, Na’ima Ibrahim, Amina, Safaratu Ibrahim, Sadiq Ibrahim, Rafiya Yakubu, and two unidentified victims.”

The agency said one body was with the search ongoing, adding that the mishap was caused by water hyacinth, strong waves and a grafting tree.

He  said  Shiroro local government officials in the company of the NSEMA desk officer had visited the scene as search and rescue operations continued.
