Bandits again killed 27 people, set houses and a police station ablaze over the weekend in Konkonso, Tunga Makeri and Pissa villages in Borgu local government area of Niger State.
The attacks were on villages located on the border with Kwara State where many were killed recently, barely a week after President Bola Tinubu ordered intense military operations in parts of Kwara and Niger being infiltrated by bandits.
Our correspondent gathered that the bandits first attacked Tunga-Makeri village in Shafachi district of the local government area before moving to Konkonso and Pissa where 21 people were killed, houses and the police station in Pisa were set ablaze.
It was learnt that the bandits entered the villages on over 100 motorcycles, dividing themselves into groups to kill and abduct the villagers around 3:00 am on Saturday.
A resident, Mohammed Kabir told LEADERSHIP Sunday that some of their people were leaving the area to Babanna, a village on the border with Benin Republic while others were moving to New Buss, the local government headquarters.
“We wake up every day to a new attack and the bandits operate freely and go back to the large forest of Kainji Lake National Park, we have told those in authority,” he said.
Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the incident, saying, “On 14/2/2026 at about 6am, reports received indicated that at about 3:00am, suspected bandits invaded Tunga-Makeri village via Shafachi district Borgu LGA and during the attack, six persons lost their lives, some houses were set ablaze, and a yet to be ascertained number of persons were abducted, as the terrorists were reported to have moved to Konkoso village, and other details are still sketchy.
“Meanwhile, joint security teams have been mobilised to the scene for assessment and effort to rescue the victims is ongoing,” he said.
