Five persons, including children, have been reportedly killed while three others sustained severe injuries in a fresh attack on Nche Shwye Rishi community in Bassa local government area of Plateau State.
Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred Thursday night and has thrown residents of the area into panic, with community leaders calling for urgent intervention by security agencies to forestall further breakdown of law and order.
It was further learnt that the gunmen stormed the community and started shooting sporadically at about 10pm.
Meanwhile, youth leader and former Secretary General of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Danjuma Auta, confirmed the sad development to newsmen in Jos at on Friday.
According to him, the injured victims have been rushed to a medical facility for treatment, even as he urged residents to remain calm and vigilant.
“We call on security agencies to intensify efforts in safeguarding lives and property in our communities. We also urge our people to be watchful and report any suspicious movements to the appropriate authorities,” the statement read.
The attack is the latest in a series of security challenges bedevilling communities in parts of Plateau State following series of killings earlier in the week, raising fresh concerns among stakeholders over the recurring violence in the area.
However, the Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Plateau State Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, did not respond to calls or text message sent to him for official confirmation at the time of filling this report.
