The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has commended the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation for its visionary leadership and commitment to strengthening democracy through an interactive two-day programme to enhance government-citizen engagement.

The group said the programme represented a significant step toward reinforcing accountability, transparency, and civic participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.

In a statement issued yesterday, the director of strategic communication at Democracy Watch Initiative, Dr Tunji Bamidele, described the initiative as a beacon of hope in a time where the relationship between citizens and government is often marred by distrust and misinformation.

The event was held on July 29 and 30, 2025, at Arewa House in Kaduna, and themed “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizen Engagement for National Development.”

He said: “In a world where the relationship between government and citizens is often fraught with misunderstanding and scepticism, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation stands out as a beacon of hope and collaboration.

“The foundation’s commitment to fostering a culture of dialogue and transparency is commendable and essential for the growth of a vibrant democratic society. The interactive programme serves as a timely platform for evaluating the progress made by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in fulfilling electoral promises made during the 2023 presidential campaign.

“The Democracy Watch Initiative recognises the importance of this follow-up event, especially in the context of the successful interactive session held with presidential candidates in October 2022.

“That event marked a pivotal moment in our nation’s political landscape, as it facilitated a direct engagement between the electorate and those vying for leadership positions. The commitments secured during that session laid the groundwork for a renewed sense of accountability and responsibility among our leaders.

“As we approach the 2025 interactive programme, it is imperative to assess the strides made in delivering on those commitments. Two years into President Tinubu’s administration, citizens have a right to inquire about the tangible outcomes of the promises.

“This upcoming event will not only provide a forum for government officials to present their achievements and challenges but will also empower citizens to voice their concerns, expectations, and aspirations. Such dialogue is crucial for fostering a sense of ownership among citizens regarding national development.

“Moreover, the interactive programme aims to address the prevalent misinformation and misconceptions surrounding government policies and actions. In an era characterised by rapid information dissemination, it has become increasingly important to ensure that citizens have access to accurate and comprehensive information.

“By promoting transparency and open communication, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation is playing a vital role in bridging the gap between the government and the governed. This initiative will undoubtedly contribute to building trust, which is the cornerstone of any thriving democracy.”

According to DWI, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation is playing a key role in restoring trust and fostering civic responsibility by bridging the gap between government and the governed. The event’s interactive structure is designed to encourage collaborative problem-solving and inclusive policy-making.

He added, “The Democracy Watch Initiative is particularly encouraged by the emphasis on constructive dialogue within the programme’s framework. Engaging citizens in meaningful conversations about governance not only strengthens democratic practices but also fosters a culture of civic responsibility. As citizens become more informed and involved, they are better equipped to hold their leaders accountable, enhancing the overall quality of governance.

“We also recognise the broader implications of this programme for national development. When citizens and government work collaboratively, it leads to more effective policies and programs that reflect the needs and aspirations of the populace. The interactive nature of the event will facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences, allowing for the co-creation of solutions to the challenges facing our nation.

“Together, let us foster an environment of open dialogue and collaboration, ensuring that our government remains responsive to the needs of its citizens. We look forward to the outcomes of the 2-day interactive programme and the positive impact it will have on our collective journey toward a more democratic and prosperous Nigeria.”
