The Chief Executive Officer of Air India, Campbell Wilson, has resigned from his position, according to multiple Indian media reports on Tuesday.

Details surrounding Wilson’s abrupt resignation remained unclear, as neither the airline nor its parent company, Tata Group, has issued an official statement. However, reports by the Press Trust of India indicated that the New Zealand-born executive stepped down before completing his five-year term.

Wilson, who assumed leadership in 2022 following Air India’s privatisation, is expected to remain in office temporarily to ensure a smooth transition while a successor is appointed.

His exit came at a time when the airline had been grappling with regulatory pressure linked to a series of safety-related incidents and operational disruptions. Industry observers said these challenges have cast a shadow over the carrier’s ambitious turnaround strategy.

During his tenure, Wilson spearheaded efforts to modernise Air India’s ageing fleet, enhance service delivery, and streamline operations. However, these initiatives were significantly hampered by global supply chain disruptions, aircraft delivery delays, and rising operational costs.

A major blow to the airline under his leadership was the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171 crash in June 2025. The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner went down shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, resulting in the deaths of all but one of the 242 passengers and crew onboard, along with 19 people on the ground.

The incident intensified scrutiny from aviation regulators and raised concerns over the airline’s safety protocols, further complicating its turnaround efforts.
