To enhance governance across Nigeria, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume has rallied Secretaries to State Governments (SSGs) in a crucial meeting to improve policy execution nationwide.

The gathering in Abuja yesterday marked the first meeting of the Forum of SGF and SSGs for the year.

The forum, “Improving Policy Coordination and Implementation for Sustainable National Development: The Role of Secretaries to State Governments,” was designed to equip SSGs with the knowledge and tools necessary to assist their governor’s ineffective governance.

Addressing the assembly, Akume emphasised the critical role of SSGs in translating national policies into tangible action at the state level.

“As Secretaries to State Governments, you bear the immense responsibility of tailoring these policies to the unique needs of your respective states,” Akume stated, underscoring the importance of their positions in the governance structure.

The SGF highlighted the challenges facing the nation, particularly in light of the bold reforms introduced by President Tinubu’s administration.

“Such reforms come with their challenges,” Akume acknowledged, “as we continue the arduous but rewarding journey of nation-building.”

He stressed that the success of these initiatives hinges on effective coordination between federal and state levels.

Akume urged the state secretaries to fully engage with the presentations and discussions, aiming to leave with actionable insights to improve their work.

Notable speakers at the event included former SGF Senator Pius Anyim, who delivered the keynote address. He brought his wealth of experience to inspire and guide the current officeholders.

Akume was open to addressing the complexities of the role. “Being a Secretary to Government is difficult,” he noted.

He called for adaptability, creativity, and an unwavering resolve to confront challenges head-on.

He encouraged the SSGs to advocate for their ideas and initiatives boldly and enthusiastically.

“Now more than ever, the role of Secretaries to State Governments is pivotal in translating policy into actionable outcomes that directly improve the lives of Nigerians,” Akume declared.
