Akwa Ibom State government has vowed punitive action against two medical doctors who absconded from their duty posts unannounced.

LEADERSHIP learnt that the two medical professionals, Dr. Uduakabasi Ita, a consultant radiologist and Dr. Mfonobong George Bassey, consultant hematologist, both staff of the state Ministry of Health left their jobs after being trained for eight years by the state government.

However, the Commissioner of Health in the state, Dr. Ekim John, on Monday in Uyo, the State capital, warned the affected doctors to resume at their duty posts in the State civil service, or refund all resources spent on their training by the state government.

“Henceforth, all medical officers trained by the state government must serve out the agreed number of years in the State before being allowed to resign,” the commissioner said.

He insisted that “government will not allow its best hands to exit service for greener pastures, without first serving Akwa Ibom people whose resources were deployed for their training.”
