In an interaction with journalists yesterday at the Police Headquarters in Ikot Akpanabia, near Uyo, the state capital, the police spokesperson, DSP TImfon John, said the traditional ruler took the law into his hands when he deliberately fired gunshots at a woman during a heated argument over palm fruits.
The victim, LEADERSHIP learnt, who was fatally wounded on the head, is receiving emergency treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

She said, “At approximately 2:30pm, operatives of the command received a report of an attempted murder from Ibagwa community in Abak LGA.

“According to the report filed by a man (name withheld), his brother, Chief Friday Jonah Umoren, the village head of Ibagwa, allegedly shot their sister, Unwana Effiong Friday Inyang, 32, on the head with a gun.

“The victim was immediately taken to a hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

“The police responded to the scene, and the suspect, Chief Friday Jonah Umoren, was arrested and taken into custody. A long, single-barrelled gun believed to have been used in the assault was recovered from his possession,” John stated

According to her, preliminary investigations suggested that the incident resulted from a misunderstanding over palm fruits, adding that the law would take its normal cause at the completion of investigation.
