Alan Shearer Rejects Clattenburg’s Stance On Vinicius’ Racism Row

Former Premier League star Alan Shearer has challenged ex-referee Mark Clattenburg’s comments regarding Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and alleged racist abuse. Clattenburg suggested Vinicius “made it difficult for the referee” by goading Benfica fans after reporting racist remarks from Gianluca Prestianni during Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory in Portugal.

Speaking on Amazon Prime, Clattenburg opined that Vinicius’s celebration of his winning goal “triggered” the racist comment. This viewpoint has drawn considerable criticism online.

Shearer, however, insisted there is “no excuse for racial abuse in football.”

Clattenburg explained the protocol: “Vinicius Junior is not happy with what’s been said. He’s informed the referee… and the referee is now following the protocol of a racial comment.” He added, “The problem in this situation is he’s made it difficult for the referee. All he has to do is, yes, celebrate, but then turn back and he’s made it very difficult.”

Former England striker Shearer appeared to take issue with this, stating: “That doesn’t excuse whatever has been said to him. There’s no doubt he antagonised the crowd with his celebration and he stood there for long enough. But we don’t know what has been said to him.”
