Benue State governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has expressed shock over the assassination of the former president, Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Margaret Igbetar who he said was a minister in the temple of justice and fought hard in various capacities to ensure the rights and liberties of all, especially the vulnerable
The governor, who condemned the murder lamented why a citizen who has contributed her quota to the development of the society, will be murdered in cold blood in her resident and home state.
“I am very shock with this kind of act and I am directing the security agencies to swing into action and ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are apprehended and brought to book,”the governor stated.
Why praying for the repose of her soul, the governor stated that Justice Igbetar‘s murder is a great loss to her family, the judicial system, the state and humanity at large. Meanwhile, the Benue State Police command has arrested one Aondhemba Joseph in connection with the murder.
The State Police public relations officer (PPRO), Catherine Anene who disclosed this in a statement explained that „on the August 24, 2023 at about 3:30pm, information was received at ‚E‘ Police Division Makurdi, that Justice Igbetar (rtd) could not respond to calls and was no where to be found.
Detectives were immediately deployed for investigation.
According to her, „a search conducted within her house at Wantor Kwange street, Gboko road, Makurdi led to the discovery of her dead body in a pool of blood inside her kitchen. It was also observed that she had deep cuts at her back“.
She said further investigation led to the arrest of one Aondohemba Joseph and recovery of exhibits for detailed investigation.
While commiserating with family and friends of the deceased, the commissioner of police, Benue state command, CP. Nnamdi Onyeka condemned the dastardly act.
He assured the government and people of the state of his commitment to unravel the mystery behind the death and bring perpetuators of the barbaric act to book.
