A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Amoda Bello, has called on President Bola Tinubu to reinstate Tajudeen Baruwa as the national president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Bello, who is also a leader of the drivers’ union, stated that the call became necessary due to various court judgments affirming Baruwa’s leadership as the National President of the NURTW.
Tinubu had, during the judges’ conference, urged the Judiciary to embrace bold, practical reforms that would restore public trust and strengthen the rule of law, warning that the legitimacy of the courts is threatened when justice is delayed or tainted.
His words: “The backlog of cases in our courts must be addressed with urgency.
Our courts must no longer be places where cases languish for years. Justice exists for the people, and their faith in the judicial process is the foundation of our national stability,” he said.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Thursday, Bello urged the President to “ensure strict compliance with the judgments of the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal.”
Bello stated further that, “The National Industrial Court had on March 11, 2024, confirmed Comrade Baruwa and members of his Executive as the elected leaders of the NURTW.”
According to him, “On November 8, 2024, the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal and confirmed the judgment of the National Industrial Court, recognising Comrade Baruwa as the President of the NURTW.”
While noting that the judgments are final and must be respected, the APC Chieftain stated that failure to uphold the rule of law in this matter could erode public confidence in the justice system.
“Since President Bola Tinubu believes in the rule of law, he should act swiftly to uphold the judgment of the courts; justice delayed is justice denied. This is the right time for the President to restore Comrade Baruwa to his rightful position.
“I have been a hardened supporter of President Tinubu since he became the governor of Lagos. We believe in his leadership and are satisfied with the achievements he has made since becoming the President of this country. The President should not allow a set of individuals to set him apart from the rule of law. He must act now and restore the rightful occupant of the NURTW to his position.”
