Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Legislative Council has impeached its speaker, Hon. Matthew Yare, who represents Nyanya Ward on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).
The lawmakers impeached the former speaker at a plenary session, presided over by the deputy speaker, Hon. Tony Onoja, yesterday.
The councillors later elected Hon. Ibrahim Jankaro(APC), representing Kabusa Ward, as the new speaker.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the impeachment, Jankaro said the decision was rooted in democratic procedure and the standing orders of the Council.
“What just happened now is the impeachment of the former Speaker of Abuja Municipal Council. And this is the democratic process of any legislative institution.
“In Abuja Municipal Council, the APC councillors are 8 in number, while the PDP are 4. The standing orders of the legislative council say that the minority cannot lead the majority. The minority stands to give constructive agitation and to make sure that they challenge the administration,” he said.
The All Progressives Congress which holds the majority in the Council, rallied behind the impeachment move, bringing Yare’s tenure to an end.
