Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has called for an immediate end to xenophobic attacks in South Africa, describing the situation as a threat to African unity.
The actor made the call on Saturday, May 9, 2026, during his acceptance speech at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos. Kanayo was honoured with the prestigious Industry Merit Award, a lifetime achievement recognition he shared with veteran actress Sola Sobowale.
While dedicating the award to film practitioners across the continent, Kanayo expressed his displeasure over the rising wave of hostility against foreigners in South Africa. He urged Africans to lend their voices against the trend, noting that the continent must remain a home for all its people.
“Let us lend our voices against xenophobia in South Africa. We are not happy. As Africans, we cannot continue running from Africa,” the actor stated.
He further emphasised that platforms like the AMVCA serve as a unifying force for the continent and urged stakeholders to maintain the spirit of friendship and collaboration. Reflecting on his long career and the sacrifices made by his peers, he noted that many who started the journey with him are no longer alive or in good health.
The Industry Merit Award recognises Kanayo’s immense contributions to the growth of the Nigerian film industry, spanning over three decades.
