The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has urged professional accountants to play a stronger role in advancing fiscal sustainability as the country implements new tax reforms. The call was made by ANAN president and chairman of Council, Chief Hajia Zuwairat Talatu Kishimi, at the opening of the first session of the 2026 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) programme in Abuja.
Speaking on the theme, “Tax Reforms and Fiscal Sustainability,” Kishimi said the reforms were designed to broaden Nigeria’s revenue base, reduce dependence on oil earnings and strengthen long-term economic stability. She noted that expanding the tax net to under-taxed sectors, including parts of the digital economy, would ensure fairer contributions from high-net-worth individuals and large corporations.
She added that Nigeria’s previous fiscal structure remained fragmented and overly reliant on volatile oil revenue, stressing that effective implementation of the new laws could boost investor confidence, support public services and reduce borrowing pressures on government.

Kishimi said the MCPD programme was designed to equip accountants with updated knowledge needed to navigate emerging fiscal policies, urging members of the profession to provide informed guidance that would strengthen transparency and accountability in the nation’s financial system.
