A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun, Oluomo Sunday Akere, has said that the party would source its candidate for the 2026 governorship election from Osun West Senatorial District if the minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola declined to run for another term.
Akere, who disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Osogbo, said the district would be the party’s focus once the former governor refused to run since he has the right of first refusal to run for another term as governor of the state.
Akere, who served as commissioner for Information under the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, noted that the party has credible personalities across the three senatorial districts who will deliver victory for it in 2026. However, for fairness, the party would focus on the Osun-West senatorial district for the candidate.
He contended that all the political gladiators from the district were eminently qualified to pick the party’s ticket and deliver victory against the incumbent governor. Hence, the party will be fine with zoning its ticket there.
Akere, a Special Adviser to former governor Oyetola on Political Affairs, posited that whosoever emerged as the candidate of APC would defeat the incumbent come 2026 due to the low performance of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
He said: “I need to quickly let you know that the APC is a party with discipline and tradition not only here in Osun but the entire nation. So, we fully realise that former Governor Gboyega Oyetola has the right of first refusal for the governorship ticket 2026, and that decision is entirely his to take.
“If the current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy decided not to run, our party would focus on the Osun-West senatorial district for a candidate.
“You should also understand that the APC in Osun State today has credible personalities across the three senatorial districts who can pick its ticket and deliver victory come 2026 against Governor Ademola Adeleke; that is a certainty,” Akere maintained.
