The director- general of Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies( MINILS), Ilorin, Kwara State, Comrade Isa Aremu, on Wednesday hailed President Bola Tinubu for employing diplomacy in preventing a possible attack on Nigeria by the United States of America president, Donald Trump, over recent alleged genocide against Christians in some parts of the country.
Aremu spoke on the sidelines of the institution’s 5th Ramadan lecture series.
He said rather than throw banters or call President Trump derogatory names, Tinubu “kept quiet and worked underneath to dissuade him,” adding that President Tinubu used diplomacy to stop Trump from attacking Nigeria over imaginary and non-existing genocide.
“If President Tinubu had not deployed diplomacy in that case, perhaps, we would have been going after one another; we would by now be killing ourselves.
“Come to think of it, the same Trump, three weeks after, commended the First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for her efforts at promoting people’s welfare,” he said.
Aremu , however, enjoined Nigerians to still be hopeful even in the face of the ravaging insecurities in some parts of the country.
While calling for the use of diplomacy in settling the current war between Iran and the US, Aremu said that it is better to jaw-jaw than to war-war because of the consequences on bereaved families.
He also said that the world needs peace, adding that everyone and institution should encourage peaceful coexistence.
The guest lecturer, Prof Abdulrazzaq Alaro of the University of Ilorin, listed the expectations of the Society to the families of the bereaved.
The Islamic cleric, who is the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) advisor on non-interest banking, cautioned Muslims against borrowing to execute funeral rites, adding that it is mandatory for the bereaved families to settle debts incurred by the deceased before attempting to share his/her property.
“No one is immuned from being bereaved. So, by discussing this topic, we’re taking care of ourselves and the bereaved people. Bereaved people need our support.
“Supporting the bereaved is in two ways. It should be during and after the situation. Support should be during the interment by helping in payment of debt incurred by the deceased, burial rites costs and timely settlement of inheritance.”
